What it’s about:
This major consists of two related areas of study – music theory is the study of the materials, processes, and structures of music. in some institutions, the two are combined into a single major; in other institutions, they are separate.
What the study of this major is like:
As a music theory and composition major, you learn to understand and discipline of music theory can be compared with subjects such as linguistics and psychology: you explore the principles that help determine the results, whether in music, or in human behaviour and language. Studying music composition is similar to studying creative writing: you combine knowledge of the principles and techniques with imagination to produce a work of art.
In beginning theory courses, you will read works on the topic by leading scholars (for example, Rameau, Schenker, Forte) When you first take composition, you may study under the guidance of a master teacher, who sets tasks or goals for you and then analyses your work and suggests possible improvement. For both theory and music composition, you typically examine the literature – including scholarly writings and original score – and enhance your musical skills. Advanced composition courses usually offer you more opportunities for creative expression.
Musical skills courses include ear training and sight signing, and training in voice or in your instrument. Like all music majors, you participate in a student ensemble, band, choir, or other group. You cannot become a good musician.
Although some programs combine music theory and composition in a single major, other programs adders them separately. But differences among individual professors of music theory and of composition are usually more significant than differences among programs. To figure out which program is probably best for you, you should talk to professors about their teaching style and expectations.
Career options and trends:
a bachelor’s degree in this major dose not prepare student for specific careers, except possibly as a private teacher, middle, and high school requires a music education degree and state certification, and teaching at the college level usually requires a doctorate degree.
