Communication is defined as “A process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behaviour” by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary.
Communication encompasses both verbal and written exchanges. It includes both formal and informal conversations. Mastery in communication is not about winning the next inter-school elocution or debate event, but more about being clear and effective while expressing your ideas in day-to-day interactions. We cannot stay complacent in our ability to ‘speak’ a language but must strive to articulate in that language.
We use different combinations of communication methods to communicate effectively with others. Verbal communication involves the usage of language or sign language to share information. It is used to have one-to-one conversations, group discussions, and telephone conversations, nonverbal communication includes gestures, body language, and the way we dress or act. Writing, typing, or printing symbols like numbers or letters constitute written communication. Usage of drawings, sketches, art, photographs, graphs, and charts to convey information is known as Visual communication. Visuals aid verbal and nonverbal forms of communication.
